Alpha Cisse's Journey to Italy Debut Continues

Alpha Cisse has lit up Milan’s season in flashes, but his wait for a senior Italy debut will go on.

The 19-year-old has made a habit of striking in Turin. His first goal for Milan arrived against Torino, the opener of the Rossoneri’s campaign. His second came in the same city, this time at Juventus, again from a similar pocket of space after stepping off the bench and changing the game’s rhythm.

Those moments did more than turn heads at San Siro. They sparked talk of a fast-track to the Azzurri, especially with Cisse already capped twice at U21 level. A Nations League call-up suddenly felt close, a symbol of a bolder, younger Italy.

Not yet.

According to MilanNews, Roberto Mancini is tracking Cisse closely. The Italy manager has him firmly on the radar, while technical director Claudio Ranieri is also following his progress and wants a longer look at how he develops in Milan’s set-up.

For this international window, though, the door to the senior squad stays shut. Cisse will instead report again for the U21s during the break, where Italy face Poland and Armenia. The message is clear: the federation wants him playing, but still sees his immediate future in the youth ranks.

An Azzurri call-up is widely viewed as a matter of time. On current form, it could easily have come now. Selecting him would have underlined a willingness to break from the old patterns, to signal that reputations alone no longer guarantee a place.

That statement has been postponed. The sense of a missed opportunity lingers, even as Cisse heads back to the U21s with another chance to prove he belongs on the biggest stage sooner rather than later.
