Alejandro Balde has been pulled into the heart of the late-summer transfer storm.
The Barcelona left-back was one of the standout absentees from Hansi Flick’s 21-man squad for Sunday night’s trip to face Elche in Alicante, a decision that lands just as Manchester United’s interest in the Spaniard hardens into something more serious.
United circle as Balde sits out
Balde’s omission comes at a delicate moment for Barcelona and for United. The Catalan club begin their delayed LaLiga title defence without him, while rumours grow that the 22-year-old has emerged as United’s preferred solution at left-back before the window shuts on September 1.
Reports over the past few days have detailed United’s increasing focus on Balde, including claims that the club have already opened talks with his agent, Jorge Mendes, to explore the framework of a possible deal. Mendes has been busy in Catalonia. According to reports in Spain, relayed by Sport Witness, he met Barcelona officials this week not only over Joao Cancelo’s return to Camp Nou, but also to discuss Balde and midfielder Marc Casado.
Flick is understood not to be keen on losing Balde. Yet the matchday decision tells its own story. Balde stayed home, as did Casado and Hector Fort – all players who have been floated as potential departures. For United, that will feel like an invitation.
Spanish outlet Jijantes have gone further, stating that Balde himself wants to leave Barcelona in the final days of the window, with Mendes now working to secure him a new club. The timing aligns neatly with United’s needs.
United’s left-back succession plan
At Old Trafford, the search is clear: find the long-term heir to Luke Shaw. The England international turned 31 last month and is into the final year of his contract, though United can trigger a 12-month extension. They are not desperate, but they are planning.
Lewis Hall was understood to be top of their list earlier in the summer. That route has effectively closed. Newcastle, already counting the exits of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon in a turbulent window, have no appetite for another major sale. There has been talk of a late, ambitious bid for Hall, but with just over a week left in the market, that scenario looks close to impossible.
So United have spread the net. RB Leipzig captain David Raum has been mentioned. So has Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas, a player who is also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown is another name on the radar.
Balde, though, feels different: young, already a Spain international, and potentially available at the exact moment United are ready to move.
Carrick’s urgency laid bare
The urgency has been sharpened by events on the pitch. Michael Carrick has already secured his third midfield signing of the summer, landing Brighton’s Carlos Baleba in a deal worth an initial £65million, with a further £5m in add-ons. The centre of the pitch has been reinforced. The flanks now demand attention.
United’s frailties were brutally exposed on the opening day of the Premier League season. A 2-0 defeat away to newly-promoted Hull, on the back of a pre-season that ended with a 4-2 loss to an AC Milan side coached by former United boss Ruben Amorim, has stripped away any illusions about squad depth and balance.
The left side of defence is back under the microscope. Shaw cannot carry the load forever. The market is thinning. And in Barcelona, a 22-year-old left-back with elite pedigree is suddenly not on the team bus.
If United are going to make their move, this is the moment.
