Manchester United have accelerated their hunt for defensive additions after a disappointing start to the Premier League season. The club is currently in discussions to sign Alejandro Balde from Barcelona, as the left-back seeks new challenges beyond the Spotify Camp Nou.

Despite a tough 2-0 defeat against Hull City in their Premier League opener, United’s summer recruitment remains active. While they are close to securing Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for around £70 million, attention has turned to strengthening the left-back spot. Following an error by veteran defender Luke Shaw, it became clear that the squad needs urgent improvements before the transfer window closes.
Initially, United targeted Newcastle’s Lewis Hall to address their defensive issues, but Newcastle has no plans to sell him. This situation pushed the club towards Catalonia, where Balde emerged as a key option, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Balde Chooses to Exit Barcelona
Reports from Jijantes reveal that Balde has decided to move on from Barcelona. The La Masia academy product, who was instrumental in the club’s recent title triumph, feels uncertain about his future under coach Hansi Flick.
Last season, the Spanish international started 21 league matches but missed 10 games due to hamstring and muscle injuries. With Joao Cancelo joining on a free transfer for his third stint at the club, competition for the left-back role has intensified. Consequently, Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has ramped up efforts to secure a summer transfer, with early talks with Manchester United already underway.
Flick Addresses Transfer Speculation
“He’s a player of immense quality, and it’s important to know if he’s confident he can compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players. Every day I observe what they do, their level, whether they demonstrate that they’re at the level to play,” said Hansi Flick ahead of Barcelona’s match against Elche.
The coach emphasized team commitment over individual concerns during this transitional period. “We have to play as a team; only then will we achieve success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent,” Flick added.
Transfer Window Remains Uncertain
The situation at Camp Nou remains unsettled as the transfer deadline nears. Flick did not dismiss the possibility of more exits, highlighting ongoing structural changes within the club.
“We’re making a lot of changes within the club, so we may have to wait until the transfer window closes. That’s normal. When you decide to bring in new players, you also have to consider how to strengthen the team. The situation has been made very clear to the players, and now we must wait until the end of the market to see what happens,” he explained.
